Prime Minister Hailemariam attends Burundi peace negotiations

(AMMA, 26 February 2016) - Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn is in Bujumbura, Burundi attending peace negotiations between President Nkurunziza and opposition politicians since Thursday.

 

Presidents Jacob Zuma of South African, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania, Macky Sall of Senegal, Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon and Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn were elected by the AU to mediate between President Nkurunziza and opposition politicians.

 

At least 400 people have died in violent street protests when the country was thrown into turmoil after Nkurunziza's candidacy was announced.

More than 220,000 Burundi nationals have fled the country.
